  • Sharesly Rodriguez, ’18 MLIS, has been named the first AI librarian at SJSU King Library. Rodriguez has worked at King Library since 2020, where she helped develop the library’s chatbot, KingbotGPT. The chatbot provides information about the library, its website and related research resources by responding to patron questions on the website in real time.

“I am eager to research and engage in the forefront of AI news, tools and trends,” says Rodriguez. “The analysis of AI use amongst higher ed [institutions] in California will help move AI education, research and workforce preparedness forward. AI is transforming how students, faculty and researchers find, analyze and interact with knowledge and research. Libraries are information hubs, and AI is affecting how we access and search for information, which is why libraries need to be a part of the AI conversation while also ensuring responsible implementation.”

  • 🌟 Happy National Pluto Day, Spartans! 🌟

Did you know that even though Pluto may not officially be a full-fledged planet, it's still Sammy’s all-time favorite? (even though it's been downgraded to a dwarf planet/Kuiper belt object)💫🌌

  • “My mother used to say that I would either be a preacher or a teacher, because I was always standing on a box, telling everybody what to do,” says Professor Emerita of Music Charlene Archibeque, who served as the director of choral activities at SJSU’s School of Music and Dance for 35 years.

Throughout her career, she has conducted at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, the Berlin Philharmonic and Royal Albert Hall in London. A pioneer in her own right, she made history at the University of Colorado by becoming the first woman to earn a doctorate of musical arts in choral conducting in 1969.

Read more about her pioneering career in the latest issue of #SJSUWSQ.

  • Big news! SJSU was just awarded an R2 designation by the Carnegie Foundation and American Council on Education (ACE), an important classification for universities across the United States based on research expenditures, activity and other factors.

This designation marks a significant achievement and recognition of SJSU’s commitment to research, innovation and boundary-pushing ideas; under the previous Carnegie classifications, SJSU was ranked as a non-research university.

SJSU, which began as a teacher training college in 1857, has made significant strides in its nearly 170-year history to become renowned for both its teaching and research activities.

“San José State has been active in research and has been doing wonderful, impactful research for a long time,” explains Marc d’Alarcao, interim vice president for Research and Innovation, interim president of the Board of Directors of the SJSU Research Foundation, and dean of the College of Graduate Studies. “This designation finally recognizes us for that great work.”

Read more about the R2 designation and its impact on SJSU on the SJSU NewsCenter.
